Updates, Information and highlights

Hockey Coaches Hired- We held interviews this month for both head and assistant high school hockey coaching jobs. Based on the results from our hockey coach profile survey, we were looking for coaches with the following qualities: Have experience, relationship based, build trust, approachable, communicator, focus on skill building and human growth/ development, strong focus on team culture building, hold players accountable for behavior and conduct, teach/ model character, build meaningful connections, and create lifelong memories.

The athletic department is happy to announce that for the 2025/25 winter hockey season Kevin Holbrook will be the head coach. He will be joined by both Dean Bubolo and Scoot Landefeld as assistant coaches. Kevin, Dean and Scott all conveyed a number of the qualities stakeholders were looking for during the interview process. We are excited to work with the three of them as we believe they will help drive the athletic department mission of connecting student-athletes to transformational coaches who are dedicated to human growth and development.

Middle School Boys’ Basketball Assistant Coach Hired- Daniel Davenport stepped into the vacant head coaching position on the Middle School Boys’ Basketball team which left an opening for an assistant coach. Rob Robinson has been hired as the assistant coach and brings both  knowledge of basketball skills, drills and tactics as well as a focus on character development. We are happy to welcome Rob back on to our Athletic Department staff after him serving as a basketball coach previously for the Middle School Miners.

State Golf- The Telluride Boys’ Golf team is on track to qualify enough players to the state tournament to be a part of the team component. This would be the first time in program history if they stay on track!

Homecoming- Homecoming games and festivities are NEXT WEEK! Homecoming volleyball and soccer games will be held on Friday, September 26. The pep rally will be Wednesday, September 24. This should be a fun time to celebrate our school and community.

Student Athlete Leadership Team (SALT)- We held our first meeting of the year last week. Last school year we spent a lot of time establishing the team and this school year our members are taking some actions. Lana Kenworthy has been voted in as president and we know her leadership will serve the group well. Some immediate things in the works are:

  1. Outreach Committee- The head chair, Emmy Kunz, has been working with the outreach committee members (Lillyann Mahoney, Luis Sanchez, & Hazel Noel,  and the youth soccer association to have some small-sided youth soccer games at our homecoming soccer game halftime. The goal of this event is to bring more community members together at our school to celebrate. This should be a fun time so please make sure to show up and cheer for the future Miner’s soccer stars!
  2. Social Media and Advertising- The head chair, Wilder Anderson, and committee members (Tee Mahoney, Ford Fenton, & Chris Matamoros) are starting the school year with their first goal of taking more ownership of athletic instagram posts. They have already created posts for athletes of the month and are going to continue to use social media to create awareness of upcoming events.
  3. Fundraising committee- With one of the shared values of the athletic teams being Nobility - Head Chair Leyton Holbrook and committee members (Tori Sanders, Liv Speck, & Kim Magana Rodriguez) are working to establish fundraisers to give back to others in the community. They are currently organizing a raffle for Homecoming games with all the proceeds to be donated to the Telluride Adaptive Ski Program.
  4. Athletes for Athletes- Head Chairs, Henry Pettinos/ McKenzie Kress, and committee members (Ryder Hubbard, Austin Cook) are connecting with the booster club as they are working towards the SALT goal this year of increasing school spirt. They are also working with representatives of our other athletic teams to get them to come out and support at select home games.

Transformational Coaching Purpose Statements - A number of our athletic coaches attended professional development in early August at THS around being a transformational coach. Our fall coaches have done the work to develop and/or re-work their transformational purpose statement. Below are a few from our coaches this Fall- We will highlight different ones in each newsletter (check out the TV by the gym to read them all!)

James Reinecke (HS Boys’ Golf)

“I coach to develop people of integrity, who are honest with themselves, and who can be confidently committed to golf and life”

Jim Mahoney (Middle School Girls’ Volleyball)

“I coach to build skills and relationships founded in trustworthiness and respect for each individual athlete and the team in order to foster their development towards adulthood for a better society “

Rebecca Mathieson (HS Girls’ Volleyball)

“I coach to help girls reach their fullest potential and discover how gratifying and rewarding hard work can be. I want my girls to feel proud of their athletic accomplishments and leave the season feeling like they bettered the program and their teammates' experience”

Matthew Oakes (Athletic Trainer)

“I coach to provide opportunities for student-athletes to grow in times of success and failure so that they may continue to develop their best self”

 Jobs Open-

There are a number of coaching jobs open at his time as all needs for this school year were posted at once. If you know someone who is interested in being a transformational coach at Telluride Middle/High School- Please encourage them to apply!
